Illustration inspired by Roland Joseph Essmaker (1916–2002) who was an American bodybuilder who earned the distinction of being recognized as the first AAU Mr. America in 1939. Following his service as a Second Lieutenant Surgical Technician in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, he went on to open his own gym and became a respected figure in the early bodybuilding and physical fitness community.
